Rejoice with those who rejoice

How often do we have the opportunity to live out the apostle Paul's invitation to the Romans in his letter? (Romans 12:9-18) The NRSV version mentioned these are the marks of a faithful Christian. The verse that stands out to me is verse 15. We usually mourn with those who are going through a difficult time or lost a loved one. At these moments, we offer our sympathy. We mention their good qualities. Rarely do we rejoice others unless they are our family. Even then, it is challenging to rejoice. I encourage everyone to practice this Christian means of grace as often as possible.

More specifically, I would love for you to join me in celebrating Rev. Nohemi Ramirez, the senior pastor at Seguin La Trinidad UMC. On May 16, the International University of Human Development and Leadership in Mexico City granted Rev. Nohemi the Doctorate Honoris Causa. Most doctorates are earned by completing several courses or completing a dissertation. The honorary doctorate is awarded to individuals to recognize their contribution and service to society. You must be recommended and then scrutinized by a group of magistrates to receive this degree. Along with the doctorate, Rev. Ramirez earned a bachelor’s degree in ethics and good practices from the same institution.

I’ve known Rev. Nohemi for about 12 years, but only in the last three years have I had the honor of working closer with her on the Uniting People’s Vision Team. Because of this, I have heard more about what she does in her local church and community. I  witnessed her passion for serving, equipping communities, and transforming lives. I can see why she received this international recognition. If you ask her how she got to this point, she will reply, “It was because of God’s grace, my family, and my community that believed in my leadership. They encouraged me to continue building God’s kin-dom.”

This is not a minor event. The number of females in the various doctoral programs is minimal compared to the males. The percentage of BIPOC females in doctoral programs is even lower. Rev. Nohemi shared with me that 11 people received the same degree in her cohort, and only four were females. She was the only Pastor who received the distinction.

It is essential to rejoice when someone else accomplishes a milestone in their life. It is an opportunity to recognize the good that God is doing in our lives. When we rejoice, we celebrate the gifts God has placed among us, and recognize that we need each other. Who are you going to rejoice with this summer? Congratulations, Rev. Nohemi Ramirez, on the outstanding ministry you lead and your servant’s heart. It is an honor to serve alongside leaders like you.

The Rio Texas Conference is grateful for the ministry of Rev. Dr. Nohemi Ramirez.
