Congregational Developer for Vitality

The Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference is hiring a full-time Congregational Developer for Vitality, who will serve within the Greater NW Area to support the work of innovation, multiplication, and inclusion both for new people in new places and within the life of existing United Methodist ministry settings. The focus of this position is to help resource the leaders— clergy and lay— of the Greater NW Area in ways that lead to health and vitality.  The Congregational Developer for Vitality will strategize with and encourage lay and clergy leaders, so that local congregations shift their culture, ministry, and resources toward health and vitality and help churches re-discover their mission and re-purpose their assets and resources in new, innovative ways.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To strategize with and encourage lay and clergy leaders so that local congregations shift their culture, ministry, and resources toward health and vitality
  • To help churches re-discover their mission and re-purpose their assets and resources by putting them to work in new, innovative ways
  • To facilitate an entrepreneurial spirit and develop a new sense of missional energy among the clergy and lay leaders in strategic congregations where new ministry is assessed to be possible. This may also involve confronting congregations that are stuck and encouraging fresh thinking and experimentation.
  • To assist and challenge leaders to identify congregational assets/passions within their mission field and wider community and with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • To help congregations learn how to develop community partnerships with those outside the walls of their churches
  • To foster a coaching culture among lay and clergy leaders for support and accountability in moving into their preferred future
  • To support a culture of social holiness among congregational leaders appropriate to the context of the ministry setting, including cultivating skills in Asset Based Community Development and community organizing
  • To help create a deeper commitment to discipling in a Wesleyan spirit
  • To help existing congregations be creative and embody a Christian life that is alive and open to learning
  • To work with congregations in urban, suburban and rural settings, understanding the unique dynamics of each of these varied contexts
  • To perform general administrative duties including budget development and management, contract administration, event management, hospitality among others
  • To work as a team with those in the GNW Office of Innovation, and with the leadership of the three conferences composing the Area
