Director or Music & Worship Arts

First United Methodist Church, Fulshear (First Fulshear) is a vibrant, growing
church with a strong, 175-year presence in the city of Fulshear, Texas. The
expansive master-planned communities surrounding the city are transforming
Fulshear from a small ranching community into one of the fastest growing cities in
renowned Fort Bend County (Houston metro). First Fulshear is currently a 300+
member congregation, well-known in the area for its exemplary worship music and
programs. We are very mission and evangelism-oriented as we serve families in the
surrounding communities with our highly-regarded Christ-centered preschool, food
bank, child hunger intervention program, and various other community support
initiatives.

Position Summary
First Fulshear’s Director of Music & Worship Arts is a spiritual, musical, and
organizational leader who guides our music and worship ministries and leads our
worship services. The Director reports to the Lead Pastor and works with the
pastoral staff to plan and design the worship services. The Director heads up our
talented choirs, musicians, and worship ministry teams artistically, spiritually, and
administratively.

Qualifications
• Strong testimony of faith and an active, mature relationship with Jesus Christ
• Strong musical proficiency in voice for worship leadership
• Demonstrated ability to train volunteer singers
• Experience with leading worship services that bring together the best aspects of
both traditional and contemporary worship practices
• Knowledge of various styles of worship, music, and language (traditional,
contemporary, gospel, bluegrass, etc.); awareness of trends in traditional,
contemporary, and modern styles of worship and adeptly discerns best-fit
applications for our worship settings and culture
• Skillful team building and leadership; recruits, develops and leads volunteers for
all areas of worship

Musicality and leadership strength will be the main qualifying factors. We
anticipate most candidates will have at least a degree in music, worship, or some
combination thereof from an accredited college or university.

Additional Competencies
• Working knowledge and incorporation of current and emerging worship
technologies, including sound, lighting, worship planning software (Planning
Center), presentation software (MediaShout, PowerPoint) and video projection
• Ability to creatively develop and produce special musical presentations and
outreach events (e.g., summer arts camps for children, musical theater,
community concerts)
• Ability to play piano, guitar, or other instrument

Key Responsibilities
Music & Worship
• Plan worship and music for all regular, seasonal, festival, and summer worship
in cooperation and consultation with the pastoral staff
• Recruit and train members of the chancel choir; organize and direct the choir’s
scheduled rehearsals; direct and assist soloists and small group ensemble
preparations for Sunday worship and special/seasonal presentations
• Recruit and train members of the hand bell choir; organize and direct the choir’s
scheduled rehearsals and performances in Sunday worship and special/seasonal
presentations
• Direct the children’s choir and other groups in order to advance musical
education and appreciation among our children, youth, and Early Learning
Center students
• Plan and prepare choirs, soloists, and musicians to present special music for
Easter, Christmas, and other special seasons of the Church year
• Collaborate with the church accompanist to coordinate music selections and
scheduling requirements
• Acquire and coordinate additional instrumentalists and guest musicians for
rehearsals, services, and special programs
• Grow and develop the music ministry staff and volunteers through proactive
music training and spiritual formation
• Recruit, organize, coach, and develop worship ministry volunteers (media team,
Altar Guild, communion servers, acolytes, ushers, and greeters)
• Seek to develop with the Altar Guild, artists, and others, a visual ministry of
worship through seasonal décor, permanent arts, and physical objects that
enhance the worshippers’ understanding of God’s love and grace

Administrative/Pastoral
• Be aware of spiritual needs of ministry area and encourage discipleship
• Develop and implement goals and objectives for the Music & Worship Arts
ministry each year
• Administer the business aspects of the Music and Worship Arts ministry,
including the development of an annual budget, overseeing expenditures, and

projecting capital music purchases as well as the maintenance and care of all
music supplies, equipment, and instruments
• Attend staff meetings and worship planning sessions
• Attend music-related conferences, workshops, and seminars to continue
professional development
