The Preface
/When I was in fourth grade, our congregation in Del Rio received a new pastor, and I still remember the title of his first sermon. It was simply called, “The Preface.” Rev. Platt described how the preface of a book gives the reader an introduction, a sense of the purpose of the book and of the author’s intent. He told the congregation that his sermon that day would serve as a preface to his ministry in Del Rio, a brief introduction of who he was, his background, and some things that were important to him. While I’ve never titled a sermon “The Preface,” I’ve often thought that this was a great way of starting ministry in a new place.
So, consider this a preface, a brief introduction to who I am as I begin service as bishop of the Rio Texas Conference.
First, I’m a pastor, and I’m in love with local congregations. Our local churches and faith communities are on the front lines of our mission. Small, medium, or large; rural, urban, or suburban, it’s at the local level that we fulfill our mission. The conference does not baptize infants; the conference does not counsel couples to be married or conduct services for the bereaved. The conference does not lead bible studies that change lives or form mission teams to engage the community or relate to school children in the neighborhood. All these are the work of congregations. John Wesley did not form churches so that one day he would have a conference to preside over; he invited people to confer together (conference!) in order to strengthen pastors and laypersons in their ministries in congregations. My life’s work, my calling, my writing, my teaching and my leadership is focused on creating and supporting fruitful, growing faith communities that change lives and change the world.
Second, I’m a writer and teacher. An essential element of my ministry involves reaching people through my writing and through events where I can translate missional strategies into practical, useful tools to help pastors, laity, and congregations fulfill their mission in Christ. I love to write because writing helps me become clear about ministry and helps me connect to others. I’ve written dozens of obscure articles and long-forgotten blogs, and I’ve also written best-sellers that reach tens of thousands of people, including Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, Practicing Extravagant Generosity, The Balancing Act, Seven Levers, and Just Say Yes: Unleashing People for Ministry.
Third, I love the outdoors, and find peace and renewal in the beautiful world that God has created and which God entrusted us to protect. I love to hike, bike, walk, run, camp, fish, canoe, and kayak. I’m a former marathoner and an active walker, covering several miles a day whenever possible. Walking is my prayer time, a time to mull things over, reflect on the day past and prepare for the challenges to come. Walking brings me peace; it centers me. Walking is a means God uses to bring me back to himself, back to myself, back to what matters most, and back to my calling. And I’m an avid birder, and my binoculars are always within reach. I even host a website, www.pbase.com/mobish, with thousands of bird photos I’ve taken over the years. Surprisingly, my photo website receives more visits than all my writing websites put together!

Fourth, while I’m embarrassingly behind the times in social media, I do the best I can to stay current. Fifth, I have great hope for the United Methodist Church in general, and for the Rio Texas Conference in particular. We have embraced a bold multi-cultural experiment, driven by a sense of mission. What we learn together, we will one day teach to the larger church about how to reach the mission field that God has entrusted to us, a harvest that is younger and more diverse than the churches we now serve to fulfill that mission.
There are many other things I could say—about the commitments that drive me, about my family, and my hope for the future. But this is just the preface, a first connection, as we begin our work together.

La Conferencia no bautiza a los niños; la Conferencia no aconseja a las parejas al casarse o lleva a cabo servicios para los dolidos. La Conferencia no conduce estudios bíblicos que cambian vidas o forman equipos de misión para incluir a la comunidad o incluye a niños de escuela en el barrio. Todos estos son la obra de las congregaciones. John Wesley no formaba iglesias para que un día tuviera una conferencia por presidir; o invitaba gente para conferir juntos (¡una conferencia!) con el fin de fortalecer a los pastores y laicos en sus ministerios en las congregaciones. El trabajo de mi vida, mi vocación, mis escrituras, mi enseñanza y mi liderazgo se centra en crear y apoyar a las comunidades de fe ser fructíferas y crecientes que cambien vidas y cambien al mundo.
En segundo lugar, soy un escritor y profesor. Un elemento esencial de mi ministerio consiste en alcanzar a las personas a través de mi escritura y por medio de eventos donde pueda yo traducir estrategias misionales en herramientas prácticas y útiles para ayudar a los pastores, a los laicos y a las congregaciones a cumplir con su misión cristiana. En tercer lugar, me encanta el aire libre y encuentro paz y renovación en el hermoso mundo que Dios ha creado y que nos confió para proteger. Me encanta el ejercicio por caminata, bicicleta, caminando, corriendo, acampando, pescando, por canoa y kayak. Fui corredor de maratón y un activo caminante, cubriendo varias millas al día siempre que sea posible. El caminar es mi tiempo de oración, un tiempo para reflexionar sobre las cosas, reflexionar sobre el día pasado y prepararme para los desafíos por venir. Caminando me conduce paz; me centra. Caminar es un medio que Dios usa para atraerme de nuevo a Él, a mí mismo, a lo que más importa y de nuevo a mi vocación. Soy un ávido observador de aves, y mis prismáticos están siempre al alcance. En quinto lugar, tengo una gran esperanza para la Iglesia Metodista Unida en general y de la Conferencia Río Texas en particular.
