Associate Music Director and Director of Handbell Ministries

Westlake United Methodist Church in Austin is looking to hire a Associate Music Director and Director of Handbell Ministries.

SUMMARY

The Associate Music Director and Director of Handbell Ministries is responsible for the musical supervision and leadership of all WUMC bell choirs including selecting appropriate music. Additionally, responsible for development of new opportunities for participation in musicals, outreach projects with the youth and adult music groups, works with other ensembles as requested.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Works with Worship and Music Director to select music for all bell choirs that supports the worship series themes, enhances the worship experience, is age and skill appropriate for various groups, and provides the opportunity to learn and appreciate music and its importance in the church.

Plan and lead weekly bell rehearsals for individual choirs from August through May to prepare choirs to perform in occasional worship services as well as seasonal concert(s).

Plan, prepare and lead at least one annual musical presentation outside of Sunday morning worship times (for example That’s Amore, Christmas Concert, etc.).

Work with the Director of Music and Worship to plan and execute outreach mission events to connect with the wider community.

Plan and lead special programs such as but not limited to the ukulele band.

Support Music Director in leading worship, rehearsals and performing groups and acts as director when director is absent.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor of Music desired, a Master of Music and/or Master of Sacred Music preferred. 2-5 years’ experience in performing, coaching, and leading handbell ensembles or a combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from members of the congregation, employees, and the general public in both small and large groups for the purpose of teaching and leading. Ability to read music and handbell specific notation. Ability to choose appropriate music for each ensemble.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to understand and function within a set budget for equipment, maintenance, and music.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of information furnished in written or oral form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Safe Gatherings Certified, a valid Texas Driver’s License.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Computer knowledge and skills including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, Social Media and ability to learn WUMC specific software. Musical skills that include reading, directing, handbell and keyboard skills. Ability to teach all ages. An extensive knowledge of classical and liturgical or sacred music.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position regularly requires the ability to talk and hear and move up and down a short flight of stairs and occasionally move or lift up to 30 pounds.

This job is primarily performed inside. The noise level can be loud when rehearsing. Occasionally it is necessary to make visits or attend meetings in places where there could be uneven walkways or exposure to other hazards.

Position is part-time.
