Presenter: Kara Wilson García, of San Salvador, El Salvador, is the founder and executive director of Project RED. The San Antonio native discovered a love for El Salvador on a short-term mission trip when she was 14, and she dreamed of returning one day to live and serve its people. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University, she moved to Madrid, Spain, where she earned a master’s degree in international development from Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. She eventually went on to receive a certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Harvard Extension School. Kara moved to El Salvador in 2010 with the plan to find work where she felt she could make a difference. She soon discovered a need regarding El Salvador’s child protection system: many children who lived in orphanages were being removed and rehomed with members of their biological families, sometimes to unhealthy and even dangerous conditions. In 2011, Wilson García launched Project RED – standing for Reintegration, Education and Development – to meet the needs of the country’s children where the government is unable to assist.
