To foster music ministries at First United Methodist Church by involving all age groups in various facets of music. To nurture and care for all choir members and their families. This person will be conscientious, dedicated to the life of the church, and will promote enthusiasm for music. This position reports directly to the pastor and SPRC.

Full time position     
Accountable to: Senior Pastor

Salary to be negotiated, housing provided.

Qualifications, and Skills:

1.         Recruit persons of all ages for the music ministry program by:

a.     Personal invitation — in person, by telephone, or by mail. New church members, previous choir members, and others will be contacted.

b.     Encouraging choir members to invite potential new members.

c.     Opening rehearsals when special musicals are planned.

d.    Encouraging choral/instrumental groups to participate in the worship services.

 

2.         Directs and/or coordinates all music in the life of the church. 

 

3.         In conjunction with the pastor, plans the weekly worship services and any other special worship services such as Holy Week services, Easter services, Pentecost / All Saints services, Confirmation, Christian Education Sunday and Advent/Christmas services.

 

4.         Assures that all musical information for the weekly bulletin is complete and contains the name of the anthem and composer/arranger.

 

5.         Selects hymns for use in the worship services which are thematic to the pastor’s sermon and scripture.

 

6.         Functions as the song leader during the worship services.

 

7.         Selects and purchases all music for the choral groups, assuring that the repertoire is varied.

 

8.         Challenges all choral groups with exciting meaningful music.

 

9.         Educates the choir members through interpretation of various musical selections and by score study.

 

10.       Prepares for rehearsals to assure that weekly rehearsals are enjoyable, interesting, and challenging.

 

11.       Utilizes the musical talents within the congregation by scheduling vocal and instrumental specials.

 

12.       Conducts special musicals during the seasons of the church year; i.e., Easter and Christmas.

 

13.       Promotes a community of faith that nurtures each other in Christian love.

 

14.       Participates in weekly staff meetings.

 

15.       Prepares and submits an itemized annual budget to the Committee on Finance for approval. Administers approved funds in an appropriate manner.

 

16.       Maintains current professional standards by score study, attendance at seminars, and acquiring continuing education credits.

 

17.       Schedules the liturgists for the worship services.

 

18.       Assures that the acolytes are trained and scheduled for the worship services.

 

19.       Assists with weddings and funerals when requested.

 

20.       Participates in community wide services such as the Thanksgiving service.

 

21.       Maintains professional membership through such organizations as the Choristers Guild and/or AGEHR.

 

22.       Coordinates the hosting of visiting choral groups.

 

23.       Always maintains confidentiality.

 

24.       Possesses effective communications skills, i.e., being able to have timely, tactful discussions with co-workers, staff members, members of the congregation, and the public.

 

25.       Performs other duties as requested by the pastor and/or SPRC.

 

SUPERVISION

Supervision is directly provided by the pastor and SPRC. The final decisions regarding salary will rest with the SPRC.
