The pastors of the Rio Texas were blessed to hear from Kevin Watson, Assistant Professor of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies at the 2016 Clergy Convocation. Watson led the clergy in a time of learning about the Wesleyan Class Meeting, a small group experience essential to our Wesleyan heritage.

Watson’s book The Class Meeting, Reclaiming a Forgotten (an Essential) Small Group Experience lays out a vision and a practical strategy for developing small groups. These groups are much simpler, more productive and have greater spiritual depth.

After many requests from Rio Texas Clergy, the book has been translated into Spanish. It fills a deep need for more Wesleyan discipleship resources in Spanish. It is available now through Seedbed.

Rev. Adam Knight, Senior Pastor of Coker United Methodist Church in San Antonio and Chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry, has found inspiration from Watson’s book.

“Dr. Watson encourages us to reclaim our Methodist heritage in an incredibly practical way by returning to the practice of class meetings,” said Knight.  “What’s more, he doesn’t just encourage us to do it, but he gives us a resource that actually leads a small group or Sunday school class in the method of the class meeting.  I have found this book to be not only helpful but inspired.  We are launching numerous class meetings this fall at Coker United Methodist Church and this book is a big reason why.”

The Class Meeting is an excellent resource for those wishing to know more about these Wesleyan small groups. It was also designed as a resource for an eight-week small group study.
