Family Conversations: Race and Racism
When events in our family, community, or world highlight the existence of systemic evil and sin, we have a responsibility to pause, listen, repent, and ask: “God how are you calling me to respond?”
No matter the age of your child, now is the time to start having important conversations about race and racism. Now is the time to talk about the beauty of diversity, the gift and value every person brings to God’s good creation, and the understanding that every person is created in the image of God and is beloved by their Creator.
Listed below are resources to guide your family through these essential conversations. These are curated by me, Tanya Campen, a white woman, with a heart and call to advocate for and journey alongside all of God’s children. This list is imperfect, and I pray it will open doors for important conversations as we listen to people of color, hold our leaders accountable, love our neighbors, and continue to find ways to live out our faith in the world.
I hope that the works listed below will help you and your family engage in holy conversations that lead to a quest for justice and transformation. May these resources encourage you as you move from reflection to action, as you work alongside God and others for the transformation of the world.
Note: There are so many really good resources and lists that individuals are creating and curating at this time. I will continue to update this page as I become aware of other helpful resources and tools for families. I will also continue to intentionally include as many resources created by persons of color as possible. Please contact me directly with resources or suggestions to help improve this page, tcampen@riotexas.org
