Director of Youth Ministry

First United Methodist Church, in New Braunfels, is seeking a Director of Youth Ministry.

Reports to: Senior Pastor

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Hours Worked: 40 a week

Job Overview

Plans, organizes, and directs youth programs, i.e.: United Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF), Sunday school, and other related youth activities; in a Christ-centered environment by emphasizing the Bible and Christian faith.

Qualifications:

Educational and Experience- A bachelor’s degree is preferred and/or related work experience with ongoing continuing education in youth ministries.

Special Knowledge/Skills-strong interpersonal skills effective verbal and written communication skills Valid driver’s license and background check as required by church policy.

Major Responsibilities & Duties:

I. Instructional and Program Management in conjunction with youth coordinator

• Setting program goals-establishes both long and short-term goals for youth activities and carries out place accordingly (including assessing programming needs of youth and recruiting for conference/camp attendance)

• Planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and activities (including classes)

• Obtaining and developing curriculum

• Recruit and supervise youth sponsors, volunteers, and Sunday school teachers

• Involving community and church membership as resources in youth activities

II. Leadership

• Provides an enthusiastic, caring, and safe atmosphere for youth development in a Christian environment

• Meets with MYF sponsors and Sunday school teachers to share concerns, goals, plans, needs, and dreams

• Establishes and maintains a Youth Council, meeting on a regular basis

• Provides leadership opportunities for youth in worship services, mission projects, Vacation Bible School, etc.

• Leads and plans worship for and with youth

III. Guidance

• Supports youth in activities outside the church by participating in their activities and by visitation

• Nurtures the development of strong supportive peer fellowship among youth

• Promotes the spiritual, mental, and physical well-being of youth

• Builds and maintains relationships of enthusiasm, trust, and caring with youth as individuals and as a group

• Provides an atmosphere of acceptance of new members of the group

• Solicits and encourages the participation of youth in Sunday school, MYF, and other activities

• Act as a confidant for youth and sponsors as needed

IV. Communications

• Works with Media Director to provide publicity, banners, etc.

• Coordinates with church office to develop and maintain a church wide data base (Shelby)

• Coordinating activities with staff and other appropriate persons

• Scheduling all activities with appropriate staff and personnel

• Provide reports to the Administrative Council on youth activities

• Ensures youth activities are publicized in advance

• Provides reports to the Staff meetings

• Works in connection with the education team which includes the head pastor and all staff

V. Budget

• Prepares Youth Program budget

• Prepares Confirmation budget for 8th graders and coordinates the purchases of Bibles

• Establishes a proper reimbursable accounting procedure with Financial Coordinator
