Below are some of the platforms available for online giving. This is not an exhaustive list. It includes only services that we have experience with or have a solid reputation in the industry. The information provided is only to help you get started on your research. It would take a lot of pages to show every detail.

Click here for some eGiving definitions that will make this information a little clearer.

Here are some of the issues that you may want to look into when fully investigating a provider:

  • The transaction costs listed sometimes only apply to Mastercard and Visa. American Express often has a higher rate.

  • Each service has different policies and charges for refunds and chargebacks. If someone makes an error or decides they want a refund, you may or may not be charged a refund fee. If there is a fraudulent charge, there may be a cost associated with refunding it.

  • You may also need to investigate how different platforms integrate with your church’s accounting software.

  • Some providers have different pricing if you exceed a certain amount of dollars or transactions. Some have monthly charges that kick in if you fall below a certain amount.

You will need to read their own materials to make sure you understand all the charges and policies. Before getting started with any of the services, I would recommend having someone smart read all the fine print.

Notes: Methodist churches may be drawn to this service due to the strong name of Cokesbury. This is a robust platform with many features unavailable with other services. For an additional charge, your church can also have a mobile giving app.

Vanco Payment Solutions - vancopayments.com

Vanco is an industry standard in church giving. They are endorsed by the General Council on Finance and Administration of The United Methodist Church. They are not the cheapest but the service is not that expensive. Vanco also offers online event registrations for an additional fee.

PayPal including PayPal for Non-Profits (For 501(c)(3) registered organizations.) www.paypal.com
Transaction Cost: 2.9% + $0.30 (Standard Paypal) // 2.2% + $0.30 (Paypal for non-profits) (Fee structure changes after $100,000 in yearly donations.)

Monthly Fee: $0
ACH? Yes. No fee
Text to Give? No
Recurring Giving? Yes
Paypal may be least expensive option out there, especially if you qualify for the non-profit plan. Even without that, there is no cost to get started and a church could be up and running in minutes.

stripe - www.stripe.com
stripe is different from the services listed so far. See the notes below.
Transaction Cost: 2.9% + $0.30
Setup Fee: $0
Monthly Fee $0.00 (See notes below)
ACH? No
Text to Give? No
Recurring Giving? Yes
Stripe is different for the services listed to so far. Stripe takes care of the backend processing but it needs something else to take care of the user interface. If you happen to have a programmer handy, you can do this yourself. Otherwise, you need a service in addition to Stripe. Fortunately for those hosting their site on Squarespace, this is already taking care of. Squarespace users can use Stripe to accept donations and payments for just the transaction cost. That makes Stripe an excellent, cost effective option for Squarespace users. If your church does not have Squarespace, there are some easy option for using Stripe, such as PushPay’s eChurch Giving service.

eChurch Giving (a service of PushPay) - www.echurchgiving.com
eChurch Giving works with stripe or ZIPZAP Processing. I will list them separately.
With stripe
Transaction Cost: 2.9% + $0.30
Setup Fee: Depends on church size
Monthly Fee: $19/month and up (Monthly fee depends on church size.)
ACH? No
Text to Give? No
Recurring Giving? Yes

With ZIPZAP
Transaction Cost: 1.35% and up
Setup Fee: Depends on church size
Monthly Fee: $19/month and up (Monthly fee depends on church size.) + $29/month
ACH? Yes. $0.49% and up per transaction
Text to Give? No
Recurring Giving? Yes
eChurch Giving appears to be a good platform but their lack of clear, upfront pricing, puts them behind the other option.

Kindrid - www.kindrid.com
Transaction Cost: 2.5% + $0.30
Setup Fee: $0
Monthly Fee: $45 (Basic Plan), $80 (Plus Plan), $120 (Pro Plan)
ACH? No
Text to Give? Yes
Recurring Giving: Yes
Kindrid is different because it is focused on text giving. This actually makes it the simplest solution for both users and churches. If you don’t understand text giving, their website explains it well in video form and even lets you try it.

TITHE.LY - www.tithely
Transaction Cost: 2.9% + $0.30
Setup Fee: $0
Monthly Fee: $0
ACH? No
Text to Give? Coming this month. $9/month
Recurring Giving? Yes
TITHE.LY is relatively new. Their pricing and features are pretty impressive. Because they are new and unknown to me, I have requested a list of some United Methodist churches using the service.
